Why Not?It's funny how things work out when you least expect it. Yesterday I had only a couple hours before dinner so I went back to the honey hole to see if it had more silver to give. So earlier in the day I was talking with Gerry from Gerry's Detectors about smaller coils! He's great and has 35+ years of experience so if you need anything! Gerry is your guy! I mentioned to Gerry how I haven't found many silver quarters. Well low and behold I go out last night and manage to score a 1942 Washington. It was in an area that I had previously been over and I realized my finds were coming very close to the curb. I was wondering why I missed it the first time but then I realized it was because all the cars were parked close to the curb and were interfering with my large coil. The little 8x6 coils was perfect for it and allowed me to get right up close without hearing the cars. Also scored a silver earring which makes 17 silvers (16 coins, 1 jewelry) at this one location.

Benefits of a small coil! Get right up close to the curb!

We targeted a remote location for several hours and we all came away with some very good finds! It's amazing to pull something from the ground that has been there for 160 years! Most of these finds predate the civil war and are from US soldiers that would eventually fight on both the north and the south. I love this hobby for the stories I get to see and tell!

Here are my bullets! I found all the different calibers of bullets from the time period. The largest one being a perfect dropped .69 cal. I also found .58, .54., and .52 cal sharps.

Here are the best buttons I found! One on the left is a Eagle A meaning Artillery unit. The one on the right is a tin back (As you can tell by the rust) General Service Eagle button.

Anthony was playing flag football and put his ring in his bag on the sidelines. Unfortunately his bag was kicked and the ring came out. He noticed it was gone when he got to his car. His wife Kira called me and explained the situation! We met up at the field and I focused on the area he mentioned. Needless to say, the ring is now back with its owner!!!
Honey Hole Keeps Producing! So last week I talked with one of the prettiest girls around as I saw on Instagram that her and her sister had moved into an old house. I met McKenzie in Lake Powell earlier this year and captured her heart by catching her a lizard. Well captured her heart is not true but I did catch her a lizard haha. I told her what I wanted to do and she informed the landowner and he was cool with it. The house was build early 1900's but the yard had been redone and we didn't find anything old. That was okay because the landowner had two other properties he said we could try out. Ben and I headed that way on Saturday and we covered both places in a short period of time.

Here are my finds for the two houses! I found 70+ coins at the two locations. I found 7 wheat pennies from 1935,37,37,39,44,45,52. One Utah Tax Token and one 1923 Mercury dime!

Ben had a good day as well! First location he scored a nice little silver ring along with a two wheat pennies from 1926 and 1935. Second location he found his 2nd silver ring as well as 1953 silver Rosie.

Also this weekend spent some time at a 1891 home that had previously been metal detected. I've been by twice now and all finds are deep scratchy signals. All finds are also usually pretty good old as well. Here are the finds from my two trips! 3 silvers, 2 buffalo nickels, and 26 wheats! Some of the relics are pretty cool as well, like the skeleton key and lead soldier
I didn't know how I would recover after a 10 silver day. Started with a 1919 with home with Ben. Only came with two buffalo nickels as Ben found the silver.

Thursday before the long weekend I headed back to the honey hole! It's amazing that place keeps producing. Came away with two more silvers (13 in total)! Also a cool vintage ring that was in the hole with a1944 wheat.

Over Labor Day weekend I spent time at a house where the owner told me three guys came by two weeks before and only found a few coins because of the iron nails every where. I uses two tone ferrous and went extremely slow! I cleaned the yard of every signal and at the end I had a pile of coins! Over a hundred clad coins, one silver Rosie, one 1896 Indian right next to a thimble, and a token from Eureka Utah! It was an awesome day!

The first house was built in 1935. I started working the from tree strip and my first signal was a wheat! I just knew it was going to be a good spot to get VT Mining back on track for the year!

Well the targets just kept on coming! I focused on all non conductive signals and before I knew it the time flew by. When it was all said and done, I found 161 total coins! I set a new bench mark for silvers in one day of 10 silver coins! Along with the silvers, I found 35 wheat pennies (oldest 1913), 1928 buffalo, and 2 Utah state tax tokens. What a honey hole!!!
It is a piece of US history that even I know very little about. It has however been a part of history that I have had the pleasure to search out and find relics. My good friend Jame aka PB on most forums and YouTube has done extensive research on Johnston's army and has aloud me to join him on some of his hunts. This past weekend was one of those opportunities.

I met James at 6:30am and we were metal detecting by 7:45am. It was cold and windy but we went after it pulling find after find out of the ground. It is amazing to hold a piece of history that is over 160 years old in your hand. The thought that right under feet just a couple inches are rare glimpses of the past. It was so much fun to go out there and find such relics. Here are my finds!

First are the Eagle buttons from the military uniforms. I found a total of 14 eagle buttons. These are by far my favorite thing to find!

I found 4 general service buttone, 1 Eagle A for artillery unit, and a total of 9 Eagle I's for Infantry unit. The bottom left 4 buttons are made from pewter and are older then the others. They were made in the 1820's
I had three houses line up for us. The first house was a 1929 home with a small front yard, the second was a 1890 home that had been previously metal detected, and the third was a 1919 home with a good size yard. Here are all three!!! Thanks again to the owners for allowing us to come metal detect!

The 1929 house didn't a ton of finds. I found 3 wheat pennies from 1925, 1927, and 1940 all in the same hole. In the tree strip I found a Utah Tax Token and pretty much just the general clad. Jason had found a couple of wheat pennies as well. Also Jason found a silver CTR ring in a tree strip just down the street prior to getting to the house. After that we focused on the 1890 home and once again it was a few wheat pennies followed by some clad.

The final stop of the day was the 1919 home. After talking with the owner we got started. The first old find was another Utah Tax Token followed by a wheat and then FINALLY a 1946 Silver Rosie. I was on the board and the day was looking promising.
The next signal was a general 12:34 on the machine so I was thinking penny but when I pulled the plug I imediately realized it was too large to be a penny. I cleaned off as best as I could and could make out Missouri. I thought that it could not be a Missouri Tax Token but it sure was! That coin had travel. They were minted in 1935. My grandma Meme who still lives in Missouri told me she remember having to carry them around in order to buy things. The also go my the name Mill. Needless to say I was thrilled.
I have been traveling for work but I have been able to get out a number of times. Instead of going back, I am going to start with the most recent. Saturday I met Ben at a house he got permission to hunt. The house was built in 1900 and had been metal detected a couple of times. Ben started off killing it with wheat after wheat. I knew quickly the house had not been hit very hard. I went really slow getting every signal. I used two tone ferrous setting since there was alot of iron. Two tone ferrous is a setting used to pick out conductive or non-ferrous metals from the ground. This picture explains it! I was able to find this small penny surrounded by all these iron nails.

I started finding a few nickels and thought to myself that there are going to be some buffalo and V nickels here. Shortly after that Ben found a buffalo followed by a V nickel. Since we usually find the same stuff, I was quietly confident I would find some too. Shortly after that I found a buffalo and then on my next pass, a V nickel. Also had a 6 wheat penny drop which is the most I have ever found in one hole and a 2 tax token drop as well!

I can barely make out 13 on the date making it a 1913-S. I looked it up and it is a type 2 so in good condition it could be worth $229. It probably wouldn't get that grade so I would say it's worth no more then $40.

At the end of the day, I was passing over an area where Ben had pass. I was hoping for one more good find when I got another nickel signal. I immediately thought to myself, could it be another V nickel? It wasn't deep but I pulled back the plug and found a very smooth nickel size object. I knew it was old but when I started cleaning it off, I noticed a shield!!! I couldn't believe it, I had found my first shield nickel. When I got home I discovered it was a 1867!!! My oldest coin to date. You can't get much older then this in Utah, the town I was in had been established in 1850, just 17 years prior. You can see the lines of shield in the picture which made me shout for joy!
I feel like I'm getting old fast. Last week I only metal detected once but it was at a 1908 house that I got permission to detect. Stewart the homeowner explained some of the history of the house and that the original homeowner was in charge of BYU music department back in the day. The front yard was really small so it was pretty easy to cover everything in a couple of hours. The house is currently being rented and it was a good opportunity for me to talk metal detecting with renters.

Based off of what I was finding, the yard had been re-landscaped back in 50's. I started finding a few wheat pennies from the 40's and mostly just clad. I moved to the other side of the lawn and finally got a decent signal about 6". It turned out to be a 1947 Silver Rosie!!! Following that I started hitting wheat after wheat. Then I got a solid nickel signal and I was really hoping for a Buffalo nickel so when I dug down 7" and found the nickel I was sure it was a buffalo. To my surprise, I saw a big V on the backside and I was so stoked. I waited till I got home to check the date, 1902!!! That is my 2nd V nickel of the year and my 2nd of all time.

Ben had sent me a picture of the house and told me to get permission. He thinks because I am in sales it's a walk in the park for me. I did some research and track down the owner and got permission. Ben beat me down to the house and decided to take the side where the weeds weren't such a problem. I think he was kicking himself after the hunt. Check out the finds!!!

The house had 3" weeds everywhere which made it very hard to get close to the ground. I had go real slow and work my way around them.

I watch a lot of forums and videos on relics being found back east from the civil war era and just marvel at the interesting pieces they find. I have always wanted to find something from the civil war because of how important that time is in our history. I must admit that I don't know a lot about my own history and especailly the history of Utah outside the stories of the pioneers. This last week I got a chance to dig history that effects every person here in Utah and their heritage. If you have pioneer history in Utah then this effects you as well.

Last week I joined by buddy James as we chased after Johnson's army. Back in 1850's Johnson's army was commissioned to come west to monitor the Mormon population. This encounter was also known as the Utah War and predates the civil war. There has been a number of camps found through Utah and it was a privilege to go with James who is extremely knowledgeable about it. We metal detected for 7 hours in the hot sun. I drank 5 gatorades and 6 half liter bottles of water. It was so amazing to pull 160 year old history from the ground and especially since it was from our US arm forces. Here are the finds!!!

First the buttons! I found 5 eagle buttons worn by US military back in the 1850's. I found a number of pewter buttons as well.

Here is a close up of the Eagle buttons. You can see on some of them they have a shield which means general service and some have an I which stands for infantry. The coolest button in my opinion is the US great coat button!!! I always wanted something that had US on it!

The bullets!!! I found a couple of 69 cal bullets, 44 cal, round balls and pistol bullets from the era

These three are from the late 1800's

Wheat pennies are a good sign that the ground has not been metal detected. When I find a bunch of wheat pennies, I'm going to find some silver coins. Unfortunately that was not the case for this last week. It started with a small home next to a house I used to rent. I only found 4 wheat pennies from the 40's there, no silver. I got word from a my buddy Mike that 5 houses were going to be demolished to make way for a parking lot for a church. Ben and I decided to hit the houses. Between the two of us we have pulled out close to 50 wheat pennies. Last night was the first night either of us came away with silver. I found a 1958 rosie and a 1945 war nickel. Ben found a 1954 rosie. Here are some pics from last weeks hunts.

Anthony and his family lives right next to my buddy Zeke. I went over there last week and found a couple good items. I found 9 wheat pennies and a couple pieces of junk jewelry.

I found 29 wheat pennies, 2 silvers, and 1 buffalo from the 5 houses that are being demolished. Everything was just a couple inches down. Ben found 20+ as well. We were both shocked we didn't find as many silver coins in those yards.
Last night's hunt was the first for silver. 38 wheat pennies for the week is not bad!
His house produced some good finds last year including a beautiful gold ring. I was digging every iffy signal I could find and I came away with some good stuff. Last year I was always on the look out for buffalo nickels since I hadn't ever found one. I came away with all but 2 buffalo nickels last year. I started detecting around and before I knew it, I had a real iffy signal that was bouncing all over the place. I cut the plug and at the bottom was a beautiful buffalo nickel. I always check the plug and sure enough there was another one. Both from 1916! Made a couple other finds and ended the day with a third buffalo nickel from 1919.

First time finding multiply buffalo nickels in one hole.
I decided to call on it and see if I could get permission to metal detect it. The man said yes and away I went. I noticed very quickly that this place had never be detected. The wheat pennies were only 3-4 inches down. I had a feeling I was going to get into some good finds. Well I did!!! Friday night I only had a small window of time and came away with a 1916-S mercury dime and 7 wheat. I decided to get up early Saturday and go back. The day ended up being a record day for silver coins.

Yard was small but full of good stuff!!!
It's a pretty good size yard and I have been working it really slow. Since it was just me, I tried to go over Ben's area so I could make him jealous but like always, he did a great job of cleaning out every good signal. I did happen to find another token on his side though. Sorry Ben!

Here are the finds! Just a few feet from where I found another Indian, I found a 1895 Indian which makes three for the yard. I found 5 wheat pennies from 1917, 1918, 1919, 1941, and 1956. My relics were one copper ring, pad lock, and a couple bullet casing. The two tokens rounded out the night, one Utah Tax Token and a "Only for Amusement" Token that Ben missed :)
During that time I got one of my best friend's dad to pick up the hobby. Tyler now has the bug really bad and is always calling me telling me what he found. He recently got permission to hunt the one of the oldest houses in our hometown of Weiser Idaho. It is a huge property but I knew it was a good one when he started sending me pics of his finds. This weekend I decided to drive up there to give it a shot. Hoping Tyler hadn't cleaned it all out. Here are some of Tyler's finds

I got to Weiser about 1am and went downstairs to find this guy relaxing. Just a little blow snake but that's what happens when you live on a farm.

I got to the house at 7:30am. Tyler wanted me to go over a patch of area where he had already been. Looking at the place I started right next to the old stone wall. First signal was a 1946 silver Rosie. I took three steps and picked up a 1919 wheat. Walked a few more steps and picked up a 1916 buffalo. I thought this house was going to be a gold mine. Went the next two hours with hardly anything. It has been hit before but someone forgot to hit the rock wall I guess.

After a dry spell, I was about to quit for lunch when I came right up to the base of a tree and got a real iffy signal. I pulled the plug back and out came these 5 beautiful coins. First was the 1918 SLQ, then 1916 buffalo, 1913 wheat, 1903 Indian penny, and a 1917 Mercury dime to round it out. One of the most amazing pocket spills I have every found
One of the cool things I found was this "National Wool Growers Association" "Portland Oregon 1911". The top is a picture of what it is suppose to look like. The bottom is the one I found. Apparently 2000 delegates from across the US met to discuss potential tariffs to the wool industry. Here is the Newspaper Article. The house was used for many meetings as well so it could be that the delegate from Weiser lived there or lost it there. Looking at the journal from the convention, one Weiser based company stood out, Butterfield Live Stock Co. The other very cool find was the "Oregon Trail Park, Weiser Idaho" tag. After doing some research I realized this has correlation with Mortimer's Island. Mortimer's island was an amusement park in Weiser back in the early 1900's. I believe this a tag used to leave your personal belongings when you ride the rides and come back for them later. It is just a guess but I love that it says Weiser Idaho.
He had a buddy who closed on a 1900 home that we decided to go by and try. Ben had a great day of finds. You can see them on Ben's Blog. I came away with 7 wheats on the day from 1913, 1918, 1925, 1939,1945,2-1950 and a Utah Tax Token.

The key in the middle is a key for Idaho Bank & Trust and it has Blackfoot-Pocatello-Burley on the bottom. Only fitting that an Idaho boy would find it haha.
Yesterday Ben got the crazy idea to see if we could detect around some of the greens at Cascade golf course. They are taking the golf course out and developing the area with homes. He thought we could find some old vintage ball markers. I told him we had a good chance for some rings but he didn't believe me until he found a Tungsten wedding band. I came away with a few ball markers and some change. Still was pretty fun to be out there.
I grid off the side I worked last time and switched to manual. I was very impressed that I found what I did in areas where previously I hit very hard. Ben and I both came away with some good finds.

First find in the area I know I covered before was this beautiful WW2 button. Manual sensitivity picked it up where auto didn't. This was the find of the night for me
The home owner Mike wanted to film us while we metal detected to do a piece for YouTube. While he was filming, I pulled my 4th buffalo nickel of the year. 1923 and it's in great condition.
I love finding tokens. It tells a little more about the place. I found 2 Utah Tax tokens but the coolest one was the "Good for 5 Cents" token. I can't read the back yet so I don't know where it's from.

Mike got out there with his kids towards the end. Everyone wanted to try and they did pretty well for the short period of time. They found a couple pennies, a dime, and a quarter. Special thanks to Mike for letting us come metal detect the yard.
The owners were super nice and agreed to let me and Ben come detect it. We showed up a couple days later ready to go. Mike the home owner even got into the action and I think we converted another person to the metal detecting ways.

At first I was a little frustrated because Ben had a couple 1917 wheat pennies for I had my first real coin. It took me a little longer but I started finding some good finds.

It was a lovely night when we got out there.
Here is the most interesting coin of the day. I thought I had a large cent but knew it couldn't be because of the age of the home. After cleaning up I say that it was a large cent but just not American. It turned out to be 1915 Canadian one cent. It makes it my oldest foreign coin.
It was a popular spot with plenty of people around. It is not an old park so I was just focusing on finding some silver since my count has been down lately. I ended the night with a pile of clad and 2 CTR rings. They were both silver but the large of the two ended up having some black hill gold in it as in inside of the ring read RTC .925 12K. I was pretty happy with that. The ring retails for $80+. Not a back night!
Lots of travel and lots of just metal detecting had prevented me from getting caught up. I have kept up on the photos so I'll let them speak for the last few weeks. These are in order of most recent to the oldest since last time I posted.

Saturday it rained most of the morning. Jason came down from Salt Lake and Ben met up as well. We hit a 1877 home that was hit several times before by others. They did a pretty decent job but I was happy to find my first V nickel from 1884. I can finally cross that off my list! We tried a few other spots but Saturday was not about quantity, it was about quality.
I found a house from 1923 that had the yard ripped out so I stopped and tried it out. The ground was solid gravel and was hard to dig. It also made it pretty easy to find things since they were all on the surface. Best finds were a 1945 War nickel, 1954 silver Rosie, and 4 wheats.
Spent a night looking for my buddy's gold wedding ring in Sandy. Derald is my good friend of many years who is always joking about my metal detecting. He is not poking fun anymore! I found the ring within 10 minutes of getting there. The ring is 14K and is made from gold given to him from his grandmother. Ben and I had good time looking for it.
That same night Ben got a call from a member in his ward and told us of a place where they are excavating the lot. There wasn't a lot of target but I managed this small token ring from the hit radio show Sky King from the 1940's. It was pretty good find.
This home was built in late 1800's. Didn't find anything old but did managed a small silver ring and a large good luck token. Also found a dog tag as well.
One day I stopped by this tree strip where the owner told me another guy had just barely metal detected it. Having an ego I was determined to find something they left behind. I found a couple modern coins and parts to an old toy. Looks like a construction truck.
I met Ben one night at Lions park and got rained on pretty hard. I found two wheat pennies from the 50's, a silver heart from a necklace, and a English pound. After the rain in so beautiful against the mountains.

One of the last trips to the corner house next to Pioneer Park yielded three wheats and a couple really cool relics. The coolest find of the night was in the same hole as one of the wheat pennies. It was a old purple bottle that was most likely used for aspirin back in the day.
It is the oldest park in town and he was going to hit it hard. He sent me a picture of the gutter all tore up. Anytime you see fresh dirt that has been untouched for years it's a must hit spot. He came away with his first silver and a couple other cool relics.

I went to Pioneer Park last night hoping to follow his example. When I got there I noticed a man working to dig up his yard. The house looked like it could be from the 1800's so I stopped and talked to him and his wife. They gave me permission and so I started on the dug up area of the yard. The first coin was a 1919 wheat penny followed by an old square nail from the 1800's. I thought it was going to pay out some old silver but in the end I found 6 wheats from 1915, 1919, 1927, 1940, 1947, and 1952. Also found some cool relics as well.

I told them I would love to come back and then I went back over the park to hit the gutter that was ripped out. The first coin I found was a 1944 Mercury dime and I thought I was going to get a couple silver for the day. After that I seemed only to find old buttons, the most I have ever found in one outing. The last thing I found was a 1913 Wheat penny.

I love finding old square nails. It gives me hope of some older silver in the ground.
Here's a close up of Pioneer Park and the gutter where I found the buttons and Mercury dime. The buttons made me think of my grandma Van Tassell. When I was little kid she would play this game called Button, Button, Who Has The Button? I sure do love and miss her!
I was in Mexico for a company retreat that allowed me to spend some time metal detecting the beaches. The resort was all inclusive and I quickly realized that there was not a lot on the beach besides nails and bolts. The three days I went out I picked up over a hundred pieces of iron and only 2 coins. It was disappointing.

Last week Ben and I got back out there and started hitting a few houses I go permission to hunt. I have been optimistic on finding some older coins since these homes are all from the late 1800's. Here are some of the finds from the last couple outings.

First house is a 1897 home with a big yard. All the tree strips have huge trees still there so I thought it would be a good area. Ben found one silver dime and I found a silver ring. I ended with 7 wheats all from the 40's so it didn't pay out as good as we thought it would.

The next spot was a late 1800's home that owner told me used to be a polygamist home back in the day. The first outing yielded very little for myself. I only found a bunch of clad and 2 wheat pennies. Ben came away with a silver dime, silver ring, and silver war nickel. I went back twice this last week and started finding some good stuff.

My first trip back yielded some interesting items. The coolest being the old school key from the 1800's. I also came way with a 1924 mercury dime and 4 wheat. The oldest wheat penny was 1916.

The second outing last week was not as profitable. I found a bunch of clad pennies and some relics. One of the relics was a license plate cover that read San Francisco. The coolest find was the 1982 Austrian coin that is aluminum. This was my first stop on Saturday.
After moving locations, Ben and I got permission to hunt this old home what was building a play ground. Lots of surface coins. Ben found a buffalo nickel on the surface and shortly after that I found a 1917 buffalo nickel as well. Once again no silver though.
Ben had to leave so I headed over to another house that I got permission to hunt. Another late 1800's home. I found a total of 7 wheat pennies from the 40's and 50's. Some of the other finds included a old lipstick container and a 1976 calendar. When it was all said and done I ended Saturday with over 100 coins.
